One of Broadway's greatest triumphs, the Stephen Sondheim Theater is located in the heart of Manhattan's Theater District on West 43rd St., between Broadway and 6th ave. From theater to nightclub and back to theater, the Steven Sondheim has enjoyed popularity since its opening in 1918, perhaps owing partially to the fact that it was the first air conditioned theater in Manhattan. After its first hit show with Noel Coward's "The Vortex", in 1927, the theater's golden years ran from the 1930's to the 1960's with performances by the likes of Helen Hayes, Lillian Gish, and Douglas Fairbanks, until its sale in 1966, at which time the theater saw some of the more corrupt elements of New York, first as a porn theaters and later as a disco club. However, after a short stint as the Henry Miller Theater it returned to the light in 2009, as the Stephen Sondheim Theater in honor of the American composer's 80th birthday with an engagement of the "Pee Wee Herman Show." and is currently home to "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical." From the highs to the lows, to the highs, the Stephen Sondheim Theater is a theater with a true New York style past, and one worth celebrating in true New York fashion.
